Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
