Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
