In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
